Much thought had been given to their duets, so that even though ‘Ev’rything a hat should be’ does not come anywhere near the delight of ‘Che Susanna alla stessa si fè’ their vocal intertwining was still sublime.

Jonathan Best could probably sing Doctor Bartolo in his sleep, so intimate is he with the part, and Gaynor Keeble’s Marcellina, with her fruity tone and commanding presence, was his ideal match. It’s surprising, therefore, to reflect on the fact that when it was first performed in Vienna in 1786, it wasn’t embraced warmly by the public. Leslie Travers’ design also suggests ‘sham’: the soaring palace walls are sometimes turned to reveal them for what they are – nothing but theatre flats propped up by struts and braces. The Count supports them: with Figaro out of the way, he can bed Susanna with impunity. The conductor and all on stage have the courage to hold that silence. Nowadays, however, Figaro is widely regarded as perhaps the most crowd-pleasing of all operas. The smaller roles are exquisitely filled by Gaynor Keeble’s fruity-voiced Marcellina, Joseph Shovelton’s waspish Don Basilio and Jonathan Best’s vengeful Doctor Bartolo. Both arias were exceptionally well sung, and we look forward to hearing much more from this talented young mezzo. Be entertained by four professional opera singers and an accordionist in this short opera packed with mistaken identity, misunderstanding and comic twists. I have had the pleasure of watching dozens of Opera North productions over the last few years and they’ve hardly ever put a foot wrong.

Heather Lowe is the epitome of youthful lust as Cherubino and her performance of “Voi che sapete” was nothing short of electrifying.

Well, the Count is out to bed his bride and Marcellina is calling in a debt at the altar. Jo Davies’ production highlights the farcical aspects of the story whilst not neglecting the poignant ones, and the interaction between the characters is its most singular feature. 511726. But this is a serious comedy; the musical commentary delves beneath the farce into the characters’ emotional lives.

It’s sung in English, a practice which some of us deprecate on the grounds that even so idiomatic a translation as Jeremy Sams’ cannot possibly convey the delectable symmetry of the music and da Ponte’s libretto, but beyond that one can surely have few complaints.
