The Patriots capped off their championship by beating the top two ranked teams in the tournament; first beating UNC-Wilmington on Saturday before knocking off Christopher Newport University in the Championship game on Sunday 3-2. The Blue Ridge Hockey Conference (abbreviated as BRHC ) is an American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) club hockey conference located in four states; Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, as well as Washington, D.C. Despite not having a single varsity program in the region, ice hockey has grown significantly due to the success of the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes.
As of the summer of 2017, the BRHC was restructured to form the East Coast Collegiate Hockey Association with the intent to improve the quality of its brand of ACHA Division III hockey in the mid-Atlantic and Southern region.[1].
In July of 2009, the BRHC announced plans to create a Division II conference. The George Mason Patriots captured their first BRHC Championship Title this past weekend in Chesapeake, VA. Mason (the three seed in the tournament) beat sixth ranked Richmond on Friday night 6-1. They didn't cool down in the tournament, beating #2 ranked Radford University 9-2 in the championship game. The BRHC has advanced four of its members to the ACHA National Tournament since 2003.
