It was very boring, but I wanted to sing again after having our first hit record, “Surfin’” [December 1961, Candix Records].

Off and on, over the next few years, Al Jardine encouraged Brian that they should sing together. One that immediately comes to mind is a very poignant ballad I wrote called “My Plane Leaves Tomorrow.” I may have originally published it via Al Jardine Music as “Au Revoir,” the French word for “until we meet again” or “goodbye.”. I had him come up and sing on some tunes [“Drivin’” and “Honkin’ Down the Highway”] before he recorded That Lucky Old Sun. On the song “Drivin’” I didn’t hear enough bottom — driving bass — so when I remastered the record I brought the bass up. He actually came out on the road with us when we first performed “Good Vibrations,” and it sounded pretty damn good! So we got that one down in its essential parts. I would call someone, and they’d be on tour or too busy. The single version appeared on the band’s second 1965 album (they released three that year), Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!). Everyone has agreed in principle to do a worldwide tour. But there’s a trick to good rhythm guitar, so I take that as high praise. But he had exceptional talent, just like his older brother. We’d just have to get new ones, so I don’t have a clue where they are. We really don’t have an honest-to-goodness farm, more of a hobby farm. Sort of, “If something is louder, it’s better.” But for Carl and me, we were painting a canvas. It was just necessary. Music is more of a hobby to me than my hobbies, if that makes sense. His last writing credit on a Beach Boys record was in 1985, but he toured with the band until Carl Wilson’s death in 1998.

On September 17, the day before the unveiling of the Good Vibrations: 50 Years of the Beach Boys retrospective exhibit at the Grammy Museum, Wilson, guitarist David Marks, and Jardine were blindsided by a press release approved by Love and Johnston which read, “The post-50th anniversary configuration will not include Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks. We were more like painters, painting music with our guitars and our productions, and they were blasting it, I guess. Frankly, I influenced Brian.

And then there’s no bleed in from the other instruments because you’re going direct. I thought, ‘I’ve gotta do some recording.’ So, I put all my best friends — the Beach Boys, Neil Young, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Steve Miller, Alec Baldwin, the late Glen Campbell, and my two sons, Matt and Adam Jardine — on the project.

Can you believe that? For a night out, the group recreates the Beach Boys' sound almost as well as the band that was touring under that name at the same time, but a recording inevitably suffers in comparison to the original recordings. One song that turned out really well was my cover version of the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’”.
